Hot Tubs with Wood Frames
Nearly all major spa manufacturers have 2x2”, 2x3”, or 2x4” wood frames. Some manufacturers will use pressure treated wood for the base, but pressure treated wood is still susceptible to rotting, especially where the wood is cut to size. Wood presents many potential problems that usually appear once your warranty expires.
Wood changes dimensions as temperatures change, especially in climates that see both freezing conditions and hot summer days.
Cracks in spa shells are usually caused by stress points that are created as the substructure and framing shift, often due to deteriorating wood.
Many spa manufacturers fill the entire cavity under the spa shell with foam for insulation and to help support the shell. Should a leak occur in the plumbing, the foam will hold moisture near the wood, speeding up the rotting process.
Some manufacturers are switching to metal instead of wood for the spa frame. Even galvanized steel can rust, especially where the steel is cut or holes are drilled into it.
